Wind value in the Nordics

Client: Energiforsk
Published: 2016

The market value of wind power declines with deployment — a “value drop” mostly observed in thermal power systems such as Germany. For the research organization Energiforsk, Neon designed a model-based study of wind’s market value in hydro-dominated power systems such as Sweden. Theory, market data, and model results consistently show that reservoir hydropower mitigates the value drop: moving from 0 to 30 percent wind penetration, hydropower reduces it by a third, making wind energy worth 18% more in Sweden than in Germany. The study appeared in Applied Energy.
